Here's What You Can Do

There are many ways for you to get involved in all the Lord is doing at Charlotte Correctional Center.

  • Financial Support - The chaplaincy at Charlotte Correctional Center is a "community-funded" ministry endeavor. We receive no funding from the state. All of our support comes from churches, organizations, and individuals who recognize the need for Christ-centered ministry in prison.
  • Bible Study and Worship - A full slate of Bible study and worship activities are offered to the inmate population of the prison facility. Whether your desire is to participate in a topical Bible study with a small group or be a part of a lively worship experience where the Lord Jesus is preeminent, there is a place for you.
  • Mentoring - Psalm 37:37 instructs us to "mark the perfect man, and behold the upright." This is our definition of mentoring. Male volunteers can serve as role models for our inmates as they prepare for their release from prison.
  • Tutoring - The average prison inmate reads at a fourth grade level. Charlotte Correctional Center partners with Central Piedmont Community College to offer an adult basic education and GED Program. Opportunites are available to tutor inmates in reading and mathematics.
  • Father Accountability - Chaplain Burger facilitates the Father Accountability class throughout the year. Inmate participants receive instruction and encouragement as they take the necessary steps to become better fathers to their children. Opportunites include helping to facilitate "PlayDay", where the inmates' children are permitted to come and spend an afternoon with dad, or participation in one of our roundtable discussions on parenting issues and perspectives.
  • Special Events - Throughout the year Chaplain Burger facilitates special evenets such as our annual cookout and concert designed to reach out to the entire inmate population. Volunteers may serve in a number of ways from food preparation to sharing their own unique God-given talents and testimonies with the inmate population.
  • Indigent Care Packages - Many inmates have no means with which to purchase the basic necessities for personal hygiene. Through the chaplain's office inmates may receive an indigent pack containing soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Providing these items is a great Sunday school or small group project.
  • Angel Tree - Each December Chaplain Burger hosts a Christmas party for the inmates and their families during weekly visitation. Inmates are provided with gifts by the Christian community to give to their children at this very special event. Providing these gifts is another wonderful small group project. Volunteers are also needed to collect and wrap gifts prior to the party and to serve at the event.
  • Community Volunteer Sponsors - Taking mentoring to a new level, male volunteers may be certified to take qualified inmates from the prison facility to attend church services in the local community.
  • Aftercare - Inmates being released from prison face a myriad of hard issues and choices. Assistance is needed in helping to insure a successful transition from prison back into society.

Please note: All recurring volunteer activity taking place within the facility will require the volunteer to submit a volunteer application and to attend a volunteer orientation meeting at the facility.
